Sixteen days (we added a 2-day cushion at both ends), one archipelago, and a shortlist that kept changing as operators answered. Everything here was checked against operators and passenger reviews; the live tracker — sent emails, replies, what is still open — is on the status page.

Our recommendation

The west is booked: the Eden (G Adventures), Dec 28 – Jan 4, one private cabin, booking 2826484. Genovesa now has a family answer: the Tip Top II, Dec 18–25, offered for three (Carlos, Maheva + Mom) at $4,257 pp incl. flights. Mom's vacation starts Dec 14, so the early sailings are out — this is the decision to make.

Booked: the Eden, west + central

Dec 28 – Jan 4 is locked in: Fernandina, western Isabela and the flightless cormorants, with island flights and Quito hotels inside the $9,238 price for two. The $700 deposit is still to pay once G Adventures sends its payment link.

Add Genovesa first…

The same ship sails North & Central a week earlier (Dec 19–25): a full Genovesa day plus Bartolomé, at $3,009 pp. G Adventures confirms a private cabin is available — the reservation decision is pending. $6,018 for two.

Best for: budget first, divers, slow travellers.

The trade: the entire west and Genovesa are cruise-only. No day boat goes there, at any price.

The two Eden prices are cruise totals for two — island flights and Quito hotels included; Bogotá flights, park fees and tips come on top (the day-by-day below breaks the booked trip down in full). The land-only total is all-in.

Flightless cormorants — they exist only in this western corner of the world. No day boat can reach them. Only here

Galápagos penguins — the west is their stronghold. Land trips see a handful at most, and December is their lean season. Biggest here

Eight to ten hours by overnight sail. Cruise-only — and worth it.

Red-footed boobies — the largest colony in the archipelago: tens of thousands nesting in the trees, at arm's length. Biggest here
Short-eared owls — hunting storm petrels on foot across the lava fields, in broad daylight. The island's signature spectacle. Only here
Great frigatebirds — males inflating scarlet throat pouches along both trails. Biggest here
Nazca boobies — a huge colony right on the Prince Philip's Steps trail. Also elsewhere
Swallow-tailed gulls — the world's only nocturnal seabird, nesting on the cliffs. Also elsewhere

South — Española & Floreana

Beautiful — but read the seasonal fine print below before falling in love.

Waved albatross — Española is its only breeding island on Earth. But the colony leaves around New Year, so late December is a gamble. Only here
Hood mockingbird — Española's own species, so fearless it may hop onto your water bottle to inspect you. Only here
“Christmas” iguanas — marine iguana males turn red and green for the December breeding season; Española's are the most colourful of all. Only here
Wild saddleback tortoises — the famous “Diego” lineage, free-roaming in its real home. Only here
Floreana — Post Office Bay and the Devil's Crown snorkel. Day tours do go — those two stops just aren't guaranteed. Also elsewhere

Central — Santa Cruz & the classics

The inhabited heart: famous sights, plus towns, restaurants and real beds.

Charles Darwin Station — only in Puerto Ayora, and free to visit. Note: the Eden's North & Central sailing (Dec 19–25) includes the station; the booked West & Central sailing and land trips can add it in Puerto Ayora. Only here
Giant tortoises in the wild — the Santa Cruz highlands are the easiest place on Earth to walk among them. Biggest here

Every island the shortlist routes touch, profiled: what it's made of, what lives there, and how you'd actually reach it.

Isabela

The seahorse-shaped giant

Six shield volcanoes fused into the largest island in the archipelago — bigger than all the others combined.
Sierra Negra's caldera is one of the largest on Earth — walk its 16 km rim from the town of Puerto Villamil.
Each volcano hosts its own giant tortoise subspecies; the wild west coast adds penguins, flightless cormorants and land iguanas at Urbina Bay.
Signature day: snorkel Los Túneles, where lava tunnels shelter seahorses, turtles and white-tip sharks — then meet penguins at Tintoreras.

Getting there: Two islands in one — Puerto Villamil is a land base (Land only), but the wild west coast is cruise-only: the booked Eden (West & Central) sails it.

Fernandina

The untouched one

The most pristine island on Earth: no introduced species has ever reached it, and its volcano is the archipelago's most active.
Espinosa Point packs the biggest marine iguana colonies anywhere onto one black lava shore.
Flightless cormorants nest here — this island and Isabela's west coast are their whole world. Only here.
Penguins, fur seals and Galápagos hawks hunt the same shoreline, while marine iguanas swim out to graze on algae.

Getting there: Cruise only, no exceptions — the booked Eden (West & Central, Dec 28 – Jan 4) lands here on Jan 1.

Genovesa

The bird paradise

A flooded volcanic caldera in the far north — Darwin Bay curves around the collapsed crater.
The archipelago's largest red-footed booby colony: tens of thousands nesting in the trees, at arm's length.
Short-eared owls hunt storm petrels on foot across the lava, in broad daylight — the island's signature spectacle.
Great frigatebirds puff out scarlet pouches along Prince Philip's Steps; fur seals rest in the bay's grottos.

Getting there: Cruise only — no day tour exists. Confirmed ways in: the Tip Top II (Dec 18–25, a full day here on Dec 19 — offered for three), the Eden's North & Central sailing (Dec 19–25), the Seaman Journey (Dec 24–28) and the Monserrat C+D (Dec 21–27).

Española

The albatross island

The southernmost and oldest island — some four million years of extra erosion on the others.
The waved albatross's only breeding ground on Earth — but the colony leaves around New Year, so late December is a gamble.
Punta Suárez: a blowhole shooting seawater sky-high, with Nazca and blue-footed boobies nesting on the cliffs.
Only here: the fearless Hood mockingbird, wild saddleback tortoises, and marine iguanas that turn red and green for Christmas.

Getting there: Day tour from San Cristóbal (Saturdays; some operators Thursdays) — the Hybrid goes on Dec 24. Southern-route cruises stop too.

Santa Cruz

The beating heart

The most populated island — Puerto Ayora is the archipelago's hub for hotels, restaurants and boats.
The Charles Darwin Research Station is here, and free: giant tortoise breeding pens and the islands' science headquarters.
In the green highlands, wild giant tortoises graze wherever they please, among lava tunnels and pit craters.
Tortuga Bay's white-sand beach is a 40-minute walk from town — marine iguanas own the far end.

Getting there: The land base every option uses — all three trips sleep here, and Baltra airport sits just across the channel.

San Cristóbal

The capital & the sleeping lion

The provincial capital, Puerto Baquerizo Moreno — the eastern gateway, with its own airport.
Kicker Rock (León Dormido) is a split volcanic cone rising straight from deep water — snorkel its channel with sharks, rays and turtles.
Punta Pitt is the one place all three booby species — blue-footed, red-footed and Nazca — nest side by side.
Sea lions run the town — they nap on the waterfront benches at La Lobería and all along the malecón.

Getting there: A land base for the Hybrid and Land only — and the departure port for Española day tours.

Floreana

The mystery island

The smallest inhabited island — about 150 residents, and the archipelago's best unsolved mystery: a baroness vanished here in the 1930s.
Post Office Bay's barrel has passed sailors' letters hand to hand since 1793 — leave one, take one home to deliver.
Devil's Crown, a drowned volcanic cone, is one of the great snorkel sites: sharks, rays and clouds of reef fish.
Flamingos feed in the lagoon at Punta Cormorant, between a green olivine beach and a white-sand one.

Getting there: Day tour from Santa Cruz — but the famous stops aren't guaranteed there; cruises guarantee Post Office Bay + Devil's Crown.

Santiago

The volcanic showcase

Once a pirate and whaler anchorage — Darwin camped here for nine days in 1835.
Sullivan Bay is a frozen river of ropy pahoehoe lava from an 1897 eruption, rippled like black taffy.
Puerto Egas: a black-sand beach, tide pools, and fur seal grottos carved into the lava shore.
Buccaneer Cove's eroded tuff cliffs shelter boobies and herons — best admired from the water.

Getting there: The booked Eden calls at Puerto Egas; the North & Central sailing adds Sullivan Bay, which also pairs with Bartolomé day tours.

Bartolomé

The postcard

The most photographed view in the archipelago: twin bays and Pinnacle Rock, seen from the summit boardwalk.
A young, lunar island of cones, spatter and lava tubes — geology with almost no vegetation to hide it.
A small penguin colony lives at Pinnacle Rock — one of the few places a land trip reliably meets penguins.
Snorkel the bays with sea turtles, white-tip sharks and rays, between the two beaches.

Getting there: The Eden's North & Central sailing (Dec 19–25) stops here; otherwise it's a long day tour from Santa Cruz (about 2.5 hours by yacht each way).

Santa Fe

The iguana garden

One of the oldest islands, ringed by a turquoise bay that looks more Caribbean than volcanic.
Its own endemic land iguana — pale yellow — waits under the archipelago's tallest prickly-pear cactus forest.
A boisterous sea lion colony owns the landing beach; Galápagos hawks patrol from the cactus tops.
Snorkel Barrington Bay with rays, turtles and playful young sea lions.

Getting there: A day tour from Santa Cruz (about 1 hour by boat); some cruises stop too.

South Plaza

The tiny jewel

One of the smallest islands you can land on — an uplifted slab of seafloor tilted out of the Pacific.
The ground cover, sesuvium, glows red and orange in the dry season among the prickly-pear trees.
Land iguanas are everywhere, camped under the cacti waiting for falling pads and fruit.
The far cliff is a seabird highway: swallow-tailed gulls, red-billed tropicbirds and shearwaters ride the updraft.

Getting there: A day tour from Santa Cruz; several cruises stop on their way through the centre.

North Seymour

The nursery

A flat, uplifted island just north of Baltra — the most reliable bird walk in the centre.
Blue-footed boobies nest right on the trail, courting with sky-pointing dances and whistles.
Both frigatebird species nest here — males inflate scarlet pouches the size of balloons.
Land iguanas patrol the palo santo scrub; swallow-tailed gulls line the rocky shore.

Getting there: A day tour from Santa Cruz (about 1 hour by yacht each way); several cruises include it.

Two anchors now: the booked Eden (2826484) for the west, and the Tip Top II offer for the Genovesa week with Mom. The Yolita is closed for a couple, and the Hybrid has left the finalists — its Monserrat segment is not sold separately at Christmas (full detail on Live status).

The Family Plan — Tip Top II (three of us) + the Eden (two of us)

Mon Dec 14 → Mon Jan 4 · 7 cruise nights for three + 7 cruise nights for two

Mom joins for the Genovesa week on the Tip Top II — her own cabin, no bunks — then the two of us sail the west on the booked Eden. Together the two cruises cover all four regions.

Status: OFFER IN HAND (Oct 21). Galapagos Natural Life offered main-deck cabins 1 and 2 at $4,257 pp incl. flights; the operator's own board publishes the same sailing at the same price. Four confirmation questions are drafted (cabin setup, final price with no single supplement for Mom, deposit + cancellation, hold length). Nothing is held yet — the cabins sit on a public board. Cruises total $22,009; about $24,000–24,500 all-in for the whole trip. Variant raised Oct 21: after the Tip Top week, the couple could stay in the islands (Puerto Ayora, Dec 25–28) and board the Eden at Baltra instead of flying back to Quito and out again. The entry fees are then paid once, saving about $340 for two; whether either operator credits the four unused flights is still unasked.

The honest trade-offs

What land-only travellers miss

Flightless cormorants — completely. They live only in the cruise-only west.
Fernandina and all five western Isabela sites — the archipelago's most pristine quadrant.
Genovesa, and with it the red-footed booby spectacle (a small colony at Punta Pitt is the consolation).
Penguin abundance — a handful of birds instead of the western strongholds, in their lean season.
Sunrise and sunset at remote sites. Day boats are back in port by about 5 pm; ships sleep next to the site.
Simplicity — a land trip is roughly 15 separate bookings, several of which sell out at Christmas.

What cruisers give up

About $6,000 versus the land trip — and roughly three extra days in the islands.
Scuba diving, entirely. No boat mixes naturalist cruising and diving; diving requires land days.
Depth: Sierra Negra's full rim hike, repeat visits to Los Túneles, free spots like Tortuga Bay and Concha de Perla.
Town life — Puerto Ayora's restaurants and bars. On a cruise, every meal is aboard, on the boat's schedule.
Rest days and any say over the itinerary: two excursions a day, 06:30 starts, park-fixed route.
Still nights. Small yachts reposition overnight — engine noise and motion are the top complaint in reviews.

Two myths we checked and corrected: Española is NOT cruise-only (day tours run from San Cristóbal) — and land travellers DO see penguins, just fewer of them.

Same west + north + central coverage as the Monserrat, minus Vicente Roca and Bartolomé, on a dated, bookable calendar. Guests rate it 4.7/5 — but it's an older, Tourist-Superior boat with recurring damp and engine-noise complaints, at a 50% Christmas surcharge.

Coral I & II · the 4-day North?

The A+B combo is closed (aggregator-only), but a shorter Coral question is alive: if the Coral's 4-day North rotation departs Sun Dec 20, it lands Genovesa and ends Dec 23 — the cheapest Genovesa chain piece in the sweep. The rotation phase is unproven; an inquiry went to the operator (GO Galapagos) on Oct 21.

The big, comfortable 100-guest ship with a pool and strong food scores. But there is zero availability evidence for this date, the quoted cabin is an 11 m² porthole cabin (only ~6 exist), and it returns on Jan 4 — two days late.

The luxury outlier: the only single 8-day sailing that touches all four regions, east and west. It starts three days before your break and costs nearly double the Monserrat — that's why it's not a finalist.

Ecuadorian operators sell real 8-day cruises at roughly half the international price — we found them by searching in Spanish. The catch: they publish no Christmas availability, and holiday supplements are the local pattern. Worth one WhatsApp before you book anything.

A dated, bookable 5-day sailing (North + Central, Genovesa included) from Ecuador's most established operator. It starts a day before your break — keep it in mind as a land-trip add-on or if dates flex.

💵 Park fees & paperwork

Park entry is $200 per adult, paid in cash on arrival at the island airport. On a Colombian passport it's $100 (Andean Community rate). The transit control card costs $20 pp and is bought online 24–48 hours before flying; there's also a short biosecurity form 48–72 hours ahead. All fees are already counted in the totals above.

🛏 Ask for your cabin — in writing

The Monserrat's $6,328 “Available” price never names the cabin. Reviewers specifically warn about Lower Deck cabins 1–2 (tiny, portholes only, closest to the engine). Before any deposit, get three things in writing: the cabin category, whether a fuel surcharge applies, and the drinks policy — on the Monserrat, all drinks, even soft drinks, are extra.

📅 Christmas terms are strict

At KleinTours (Coral & Legend), Christmas deposits are non-refundable and holiday space can't be held without full payment — never pay an aggregator before the operator confirms your cabin in writing. At Galapatours, the Monserrat's cancellation fee jumps from ~20% to ~95% inside 60 days, so this is a decide-this-week conversation, not a decide-in-November one.
